Why choose an insurance operating platform instead of a standalone PAS?
A standalone policy administration system (PAS) manages policies and their financial transactions. An insurance operating platform adds the engagement, process, integration, data, reporting and content that an insurer or administrator also needs, already connected, so the business does not assemble them itself.

What does a policy administration system do?
A policy administration system holds products and policies, runs calculations and records policy and financial transactions. It is the system of record for the contracts it administers.
What does a standalone PAS leave to the buyer?
A standalone PAS leaves five areas to be supplied separately:
- customer, adviser and partner channels
- business process orchestration
- integration with other systems
- operational data and reporting
- document and records management
What is an insurance operating platform?
An insurance operating platform covers those areas as well as policy administration. The Spindle Insurance Operating Platform covers product administration, business orchestration, integration, customer engagement, data, reporting and content. It is composable, API-first, low-code and pre-integrated, and it is delivered as SaaS.
How do the two approaches compare?
| Question | Standalone PAS | Spindle Insurance Operating Platform |
|---|---|---|
| What does it cover? | Policy and contract administration. | Administration, orchestration, integration, engagement, data, reporting and content. |
| Who connects the parts? | The buyer, with other suppliers. | Spindle delivers the components pre-integrated. |
| How is it delivered? | Depends on the supplier. | As SaaS by Spindle. The subscription covers platform upgrades and support. |
What does it mean for time and cost?
In Spindle's general experience, the pre-integrated, configuration-based method can reduce implementation cost by more than 50% compared with traditional multi-product assembly. A first defined product can reach production in approximately three to six months. Five-year total cost of ownership is approximately one third lower than acquiring, integrating and running a comparable platform yourself. These figures are general experience, not a guarantee to a particular customer.
Can I keep my existing policy system?
Yes. Spindle works alongside existing policy systems. A customer can adopt the engagement, process and integration layers without subscribing to Spindle PAS. The Digitise journey is the starting point for this approach.
Does Spindle include a general ledger, payment gateway or identity provider?
No. Spindle PAS produces policy-level financial postings for transfer to the customer's general ledger. A payment gateway and an identity provider remain the customer's own.
